Quick Answers

What stress and burnout can look like

Stress and burnout can show up as exhaustion, poor sleep, irritability, overthinking, difficulty concentrating, reduced motivation or feeling unable to switch off – even when you are still functioning well at work.

Why burnout can be difficult to recognise

Burnout often builds gradually. You may keep performing, meeting responsibilities and pushing through while feeling increasingly depleted, detached or overwhelmed behind the scenes.

How therapy helps

Therapy helps you understand the pressures and patterns keeping you in a cycle of overwork and depletion, while developing practical ways to regulate stress, strengthen boundaries and recover more sustainably.

When to seek urgent help

If you feel at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else, call 999 or go to A&E. If you need urgent mental health support but it is not an emergency, contact NHS 111 or your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I’m stressed, burnt out, or just tired?

Stress often feels like pressure, urgency or feeling constantly “on”. Burnout tends to feel more like depletion: emotional exhaustion, reduced motivation, poor sleep, irritability, detachment or feeling unable to recover even after rest. You do not need to be completely unable to function before seeking support. If work pressure is affecting your mood, sleep, relationships, health or sense of self, therapy may help.

Can therapy help if my job is the main problem?

Yes. Therapy cannot remove every workplace pressure, but it can help you understand how stress is affecting you, what patterns keep you overextended, and what boundaries or decisions may be needed. It can also support communication, confidence, emotional regulation and recovery. This is especially useful when you feel stuck between “pushing through” and making a major change.

Do I need to take time off work to recover from burnout?

Not always. Some people do need time away from work, especially if their health or safety is affected. Others begin therapy while still working and use it to review workload, boundaries, sleep, recovery and emotional patterns. The right approach depends on your situation, symptoms and level of risk. Therapy can help you think this through carefully rather than waiting until things deteriorate.

Is this suitable for high-functioning professionals and leaders?

Yes. Many people who seek support are still performing, leading, parenting or meeting responsibilities externally, while privately feeling depleted or close to burnout. Our services are designed for people who want discreet, thoughtful and clinically informed support rather than generic wellbeing advice.

What happens on the free 20-minute discovery call?

The discovery call is a confidential first conversation with our team. We ask what has been happening, what you are hoping for, and whether therapy with EmotionMatters feels like the right fit. We can answer practical questions about fees, availability, online or in-person therapy, and how we match you with a therapist. There is no pressure to book.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

This depends on what you want to work on and how long the pattern has been building. Some clients choose focused short-term work over 8 sessions. Others prefer a more open-ended cadence of support. In your initial clinical assessment, you and your therapist will shape a pathway around your needs, goals and preferred pace.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Therapy is confidential within normal clinical, safeguarding and legal boundaries. Your therapist will explain this clearly before you begin. If you would like us to liaise with your GP, consultant, psychiatrist or another professional, we would only do so with your permission unless there is a serious safety concern.

Can therapy help with sleep, overthinking and difficulty switching off?

Yes. Stress and burnout often affect sleep because the body and mind stay on alert. Therapy can help you understand the pressure cycle, reduce overthinking, build regulation tools, and create healthier boundaries around work and recovery. Where helpful, we can also discuss whether wider lifestyle, nutrition or medical support may be appropriate.
