When Your System Struggles To Switch Off

You may recognise:

  • Lying awake with your mind racing
  • Waking tense, tired or already thinking about the day
  • Feeling emotionally reactive or easily overwhelmed
  • Snapping, shutting down or crying more easily
  • Feeling physically wired but mentally exhausted
  • Struggling to recover after busy periods
  • Using food, alcohol, screens or work to shift state
  • Feeling anxious in your body even when nothing obvious is wrong
  • Finding rest difficult or uncomfortable
  • Feeling frustrated that you “know what to do” but cannot calm yourself

Stress and poor sleep can affect mood, focus, relationships, appetite, motivation and resilience. Therapy helps you understand the stress-regulation cycle, build practical tools, and explore the emotional patterns that keep your system on alert.

What emotional regulation means

Emotional regulation is your ability to notice, understand and respond to emotional and physical states without becoming overwhelmed by them.

Why stress affects sleep

Chronic stress can keep your body on alert, making it harder to fall asleep, stay asleep or wake feeling restored.

How therapy helps

Therapy helps you understand triggers, calm stress responses, build coping tools and address deeper emotional patterns.

When to seek broader support

If sleep problems are severe, persistent or linked to medical symptoms, it may be helpful to speak with your GP alongside therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapy help with sleep problems?

Therapy can help when sleep is affected by stress, anxiety, overthinking, emotional strain or difficulty switching off. Medical sleep concerns should also be discussed with your GP.

What is emotional regulation therapy?

It is therapy that helps you understand emotional triggers, body responses and coping patterns, then build tools to respond with more steadiness and choice.

Why do I feel wired but exhausted?

This can happen when your stress system stays activated for long periods. Therapy can help you understand what keeps your system on alert.

Can stress affect appetite and health behaviours?

Yes. Stress can influence appetite, cravings, alcohol use, movement, sleep and recovery. Therapy can help you understand and shift these patterns.

Is this the same as anxiety therapy?

There can be overlap. This page focuses on stress, sleep and emotional regulation, while anxiety therapy may focus more specifically on worry, avoidance, panic or intrusive thoughts.

Can you help if I already know relaxation techniques?

Yes. Many people know techniques but struggle to use them when overwhelmed. Therapy explores why regulation feels difficult and builds a more personalised approach.

Do you offer integrated support?

Where helpful, we can discuss whether nutrition, psychiatry, GP liaison or wider HMG support may be appropriate.

What happens on the discovery call?

We ask what has been happening, what you are looking for, and what kind of support may fit best.
