When Health Worry Takes Over

You may recognise:

  • Repeatedly checking symptoms, scans, test results or body sensations
  • Googling symptoms even though it makes anxiety worse
  • Seeking reassurance but only feeling better briefly
  • Feeling frightened that something serious has been missed
  • Avoiding appointments, tests or health conversations
  • Feeling angry, grieving or changed by chronic illness
  • Struggling with fatigue, pain or uncertainty
  • Feeling that people do not understand the emotional impact of your health experience

Health-related distress can affect your sleep, mood, focus, relationships, work and sense of safety in your own body. Therapy helps you understand the anxiety or adjustment cycle, reduce reassurance loops, build emotional regulation tools, and find a steadier way to live with uncertainty or long-term health challenges.

Quick Answers

What health anxiety can look like

Health anxiety can involve repeatedly checking symptoms, Googling health concerns, seeking reassurance or worrying that something serious has been missed. Relief may come briefly, only for the worry to return.

Your symptoms are not ‘just anxiety’

Therapy does not assume physical symptoms are imagined or unimportant. It helps you understand how health concerns, uncertainty, body vigilance and previous medical experiences may be affecting how safe you feel.

How therapy helps

Therapy can help you reduce checking and reassurance cycles, cope with uncertainty, manage anxiety around symptoms or appointments, and navigate the emotional impact of chronic illness, pain or changes in your health.

How therapy works alongside medical care

Therapy does not replace appropriate medical assessment or treatment. Where helpful, and with your permission, we can work alongside your GP, consultant or other healthcare professionals so your emotional and physical health are considered together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is health anxiety the same as imagining symptoms?

No. Health anxiety does not mean symptoms are fake. It means fear, uncertainty and body vigilance can become overwhelming and difficult to switch off, even when you have sought reassurance.

Can therapy help if I have a real health condition?

Yes. Therapy can support the emotional impact of chronic illness, pain, fatigue, uncertainty, appointments, identity change and relationship strain. It does not replace medical care.

What are reassurance loops?

A reassurance loop is when you check, Google, ask for reassurance or seek tests to feel certain. Relief may come briefly, but the anxiety often returns and the cycle continues.

Can therapy help me stop Googling symptoms?

Therapy can help you understand the urge to Google, build alternative coping strategies, and gradually reduce compulsive checking in a safe, realistic way.

Do you work with chronic pain or fatigue?

Yes, where appropriate. Therapy can help with the emotional and behavioural impact of pain or fatigue, including pacing, grief, stress, identity and relationships.

What if I have had a traumatic medical experience?

If your distress is linked to frightening, painful or overwhelming medical experiences, medical trauma therapy may be more appropriate. We can help you decide during the discovery call.

Will you liaise with my GP or consultant?

Where appropriate, and only with your permission, we can liaise with other professionals involved in your care.

What happens on the discovery call?

We ask what has been happening, what support you already have, and what kind of therapist or pathway may fit best. There is no pressure to book.
